Kitchen Cabinet Makeover

Almost two years ago, my parents embarked on what was supposed to be a simple 6 week renovation of their kitchen. What they got was a 6 month process that not only included a new kitchen, but a new sewer system after discovering theirs was rotted out, a new gas line that had been leaking, a new french glass door after the lawn mower went over a rock and shattered the old one and many other surprises that came with the process.

I got a new piece of furniture and I didn't have to endure the stress of the renovation. It was a win win for me!

Their old kitchen had this really nice table with storage underneath it, but they were building in a new island bar and had no need for it. They didn't want to just throw it away, so naturally, they gave us a hand me down! Our house didn't have room to use it with the current oval tabletop on it, but the bottom part would fit perfectly in our kitchen and give us some extra storage space.

We had some leftover MDF particle board in our garage that ended up being the perfect size for it. We added on a decorative border to give it some extra pizazz.  Of course, painting it a with a simple one color job just wouldn't do it in my color wheel world.  The top is a harlequin pattern of lime green, pink, black, turquoise, white and a poppy red.  I then used the same red under the decorative border to show through the black after it was distressed. The doors were painted black first, then the outside received a coat of turquoise and I finished it all up by gluing on leopard paper with mod podge. Here's what it looked like after:

Once everything was painted, I took our mouse sander to it to give it a nice distressed look. Distressing is always the part when my heart starts racing... I put so much effort into painting pretty straight lines only to go mess them all up with a sander! Fortunately, I always love the look of it once I'm finished!

I know crazy pattern piece isn't for everyone, but it fits perfectly in our house! I couldn't have been happier with the way it turned out. Thanks for the hand me down Mom and Dad!

  1. So fun! I love that kind of thing. I have a china cabinet that belonged to my dad's mother. She painted it at some point to a nice black, but I'm thinking it needs your special touch like that buffet in your dining room.
